What you should know before buying a Used Mattress Set


One of the most common questions we get is "Do you sell Used Mattresses?" Buying used items can be a great cost savings to you, so it is not unusual that we get this question almost on a daily basis. Whether you are filling a room that barely gets used, maybe a vacation home, kids room, or you just have a small budget, buying a used mattress seems like a great way to save some money. However, before you go buy that mattress at a used furniture store, flea market, or garage sale read these laws that resellers are required to follow in the State of Texas. Private sellers may be excluded from these laws.

1. Texas State Law prohibits the Sale of Used Mattresses without a Permit to Sanitize Mattresses

However, before you are sold on buying a used mattress set, there are some things you should know. In the State of Texas a retailer MUST carry a permit to sell used mattresses in their store. This permit requires that the retailer maintains a separate area where used mattresses are treated with a specific germicidal treatment that is authorized and designated by the State of Texas. The treatment we use is called Microban X580 and it actually leaves crystalized particles on the mattress so that an inspector can detect if the mattress has been sanitized with a special light, like a black light.

2. All used Mattresses MUST be tagged with a Yellow Second Hand Used Article SANITIZED Tag.

After treatment with the germicide, a bright yellow tag should be on the item that shows that the mattress has been treated, the date of treatment, and who treated the mattress. If you see a store, flea market, or other retailer selling a used mattress WITHOUT this tag, BEWARE as they may not be authorized to sell a used mattress. Furniture For A Cause is an authorized facility where this process can be done to mattresses.

3. The reseller MUST have a treatment area that is separate from the rest of the areas of the store and/or warehouse items.

The area that the treatment is performed must be separated from other items in the store, while it may be in the same facility, this is not something that can or should be done in the store or in the general warehouse area. If you ever wonder if the item was sanitized you may want to ask to see their area where sanitation is done, to see if the work area is actually set up.

While we have the ability to treat mattresses, the process is a long process that adds a lot of labor, material, and opportunity cost that is added to the pickup costs that we incur with our FREE Pickup Service. In addition, there are many other factors to consider when buying a new mattress besides the condition of the fabric and if it is free of bed bugs. There are dustmites, the condition of the foam, the condition of the springs, and the condition of the foundation that the bed sits on. Over they Combine this with the possibility of bed bugs entering our other products when they are loaded onto our trucks or in our facility, we have decided that the overall costs outweigh the benefits.

4. There are other products that require germicidal treatment by Texas State Law

In addition to mattresses, the State of Texas requires that any item that has the possiblity of being slept on is also treated. These include:

  • Futon Mattresses
  • Sleeper Mattresses
  • Recliners
  • Reclining Sofas/Loveseats
  • Chaise Lounges
  • Sectionals with Chaise Lounges/Recliners

At Furniture For A Cause we have decided to make a strategic decision NOT to accept or treat donated mattresses as a general rule. However, we are an authorized reseller and sanitizer of used mattresses and other products required by state law to have the sanitation treatment. We do sanitize and sell recliners, reclining sofas, chaise lounges, futon mattresses, and sleeper mattresses as these generally get less use than a standard mattress.
